State: Idaho Old Idaho Penitentiary I have to say that this was a pretty creepy feeling prison - to me, even creepier than Alcatraz. It might be because the prison was still in use as recently as 1973. After enough prisoner riots, it closed due to a ruling of poor living conditions. The sandstone walls trapped the heat and made it oppressively hot during the summer, and it had that cold dementor (suck the life and soul out of you) feeling in the winter. As I stepped inside the four story building two pictures down, I felt the temperature drop, and Kaylie and I were glad we weren't in there by ourselves. Super creepy! Here's a shot of a newer cell building. Much homier don't you think? Where we stayed: Boise/Meridian KOA
I don't make it a habit of waking up a dawn, but an upcoming storm was supposed to dump snow from Washinton to Utah, so we had to get out of town fast!
