State: Texas Big Bend National Park Where we stayed: BJ's Rver Park in Terligua We did some morning homeschooling and then hopped in the car to check out Big Bend National Park. It's the park way down in Texas that you have to make a deliberate effort to get to...there's no way you'd accidentally end up here. We made a quick stop at the Castalon Vistor Center to find out the hiking. While I was talking with the ranger, Jack picked up a book in the gift shop and started reading. He'd pick up that same book at all the Big Bend visitor centers and almost finished it by the time we were done with Big Bend. Santa Elena Canyon Trail This out and back trail (1.7 mile total) is on the western side of park. Not a bad view for our pb&j picnic lunch. As much as these two bicker non-stop, when we go for hikes, they tend to team up and get along for a few minutes. Kaylie tolerates Jack's video game talk and sometimes they start coming up with game ideas of their own. The first part of the hike is the trickiest... you have to get across a creek (you do not want to fall in) where the water level varies depending on how much it's rained recently. Amazingly high canyon walls make great echos when you scream. That's the Rio Grande cutting through the canyon. The kids had fun throwing rocks down into the river. And I yelled at them to get back from the edge (which echoed). Our side of the river is USA, but if you swim across to the other side, you better have your passport because that's Mexico. Trail ends here. You can take raft float trips down the river, but it was pretty darn cold and we'd have to do an all day trip to float this far. The hike was perfect though... great views, varied terrain and water/mud play at the turn around point. Can you guess who likes mud as much as his big sister? Since the first hike wasn't very long, we decide to press our luck and try another hike with the kids. Lower Burro Mesa Pour-off Trail Not a kissing bug. Looked like a regular beetle, so the kids got to play with it. Oh boy.
